Last September I was visiting a friend for dinner when I noticed the most beautiful colors coming from the corner of his kitchen. When I got closer I saw that they were a set of knives – fantastically colored for my friend’s modern looking kitchen. I asked them what they were, and he said they were the Pure Komachi 2 9-piece knife set. I was so impressed that when I went home that night I ordered a set for myself. I’ve never looked back – me and my Pure Komachi 2 knife set have been together ever since.
Having worked as a chef in downtown LA for years, I’m used to the average looking knife set. And even the more expensive brands – Wusthof, Global, etc. – never look that expensive. For my own kitchen, I wanted something unique and attractive, yet still high-performing. The Pure Komachi 2 knife set has been the perfect set for my needs.
The knife set includes a 3-inch paring knife, a 6-inch utility knife, a 5.5-inch sandwich knife, a 4-inch tomato and cheese knife, a 4-inch citrus knife, an 8-inch serrated bread knife, and an 8-inch chef’s knife, all contained in an acrylic storage block.
Pure Komachi 2 Blade Material
The best part about this knife set is the material used for the blades. Typical knife sets are made using stainless steel (which is a strong material for blades) or high-carbon steel (which is the sharpest material for blades). The Pure Komachi 2 knife set, however, uses high-carbon stainless steel, which is a combination of the great features from both materials, making these knives an incredible deal for any cook, professional or not.
If you’re worried about the color of the blades, don’t be. The coloring is food-safe and FDA-approved. The knives are also coated with food-safe non-stick resin coating which helps the knives stay easy to clean and stain and rust free. From my own experience, the bright color of the knives makes them easy to locate and to quickly choose which knife I need for each job (blue for fruits, red for cheese, etc.). I’m so used to staring at a bloc of knives all with the same black handle – the Pure Komachi 2 knife set, with its vibrant colors, was a real relief.
Be prepared – if you buy this set, you’ll probably fall in love with it. Lucky for you, additional knives can be purchased, so you can customize and create your own perfect set! One knife which any Pure Komachi 2 knife set owner should buy is the 6-inch Hollow Ground Santoku knife. Santoku knives are a bit bulkier than the average knife and are used for dicing vegetables, slicing fruits, or cutting cheeses. The Santoku feels great in your hand, just like all the knives made by Komachi.
People experienced with knives will recognize that the knives in the Pure Komachi 2 knife set have been constructed with high-performance in mind. Besides the high-carbon stainless steel used for the blades, the tang extends through the entire handle, making these knives even sturdier and stronger. With even the slightest care, these knives will never break on you.
The only complaints I’ve read from reviewers about the Pure Komachi 2 knife set is that it doesn’t include steak knives. They all agree: these knives are terrific, and we want more! (For those looking for a nice set of steak knives, consider buying the Victorinox 6-Piece Steak Knife Set. It’s more than affordable and has received top reviews.)
Pure Komachi 2 Reviews
Here’s what Jerry Shilborn from Boston said about the Pure Komachi 2 knife set:” I have owned these for about 6 months now. At first, they seemed a bit lightweight but after using them, they are perfect. They are well balanced and extremely sharp. So far, there has not been a single negative. If you are used to using cheap knives, you should be very careful when you first get these. We had company at the house who did some cooking and she ended up cutting herself at least six times! She never owned a knife that took so little effort to use and she kept slipping up and nicking her fingers. The knife block is a little large but it displays the colors of the blades very nicely. I tried putting them in a smaller wooden block but they just did not look as good. We use colorful Fiesta dinnerware in the house and these knives add a bold splash of color of their own to the counter top. I liked the set so well that I went back and bought all the remaining knives in the set.”
And here’s Susan Trinkaus from Bellingham, WA: “I ordered this set of knives as I’ll be doing a lot of camping this summer and didn’t want to bring my expensive Henckles with me and take the chance of losing them. So, after looking at customer reviews and listening to You Tube’s “life regenerator” talk about how he loves his tomato knife, I decided to order this set to take along with me. I love, love, love these knives. They are very sharp and lightweight. As with most other customers, I did cut myself a couple of times due to their extreme sharpness. The different colors help me to easily pick the knife I want. And the plastic storage case, though a little bulky, keeps the knives from bumping against each other and becoming dull. I’ve only had the set a couple of months, but the knives are still sharp after daily use. These are the knives I consistently reach for while preparing meals. Like I said, I’ve only had them a couple of months, so I’m not sure how long the knives will keep their edge. However, for the price of them, I don’t think I could ever be disappointed with them. At this point, I don’t have any negatives.”
